Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score
Author: Lucy Score
Genre: Romantasy (Romance, Fantasy)
Publication Date: January 2022
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (Out of 5) (3/5 stars)
Introduction
I’d been hearing about this book being devoured on tiktok and book Instagram. It definitely was time for a simple mind cleanser to scrub the romantasy ideology from my brain. I was so set in the romantasy world that I needed something less complicated and a little more… easy on the eyes. Let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint!
The main theme of this book is overcoming obstacles that were not your own doing, picking yourself up by your bootstraps, and taking risks on love.
Synopsis
This is a great book set in the town of “Knockemout,” a little country spot off the beaten path with a gruff exterior and an even tougher population. From chasing down her dead-beat twin sister, to finding out what kind of mess she was left with, the main character never stops and breaks down. She takes every challenge head-on and takes no prisoners while doing so. Until, that is, she runs head first into love with one of the town’s most notorious bachelors, single for a reason. Knox is the other main character in this story and both perspectives are represented in a cohesive way, here. One picks up right where the other left off, giving you both sides of the coin (a lost art, in my opinion!)
There are several conflicts that kept me entertained, but I can’t list them here without giving major spoilers. All I WILL say, is that this was such a quick read because something is always happening.
Review
Writing Style
The writing style is simple, has just enough décor to give you the proper scenes, but what I’ve been most impressed with is the portrayal of longing and being at war with your mind and heart. I really got sucked into the romance aspect, and figured there would be a moment when I realized that everything was going to go her way… but once again, it doesn’t always work out in her favor. The struggle between Knox and Naomi is relatable, it’s heartfelt, it’s self-destructive but somehow they are what each other needs. It’s a little spicy, a little sappy, and a lot of fun.
Plot
Personally, I expected this book to be a standalone romance. I was utterly surprised to find it was part of a series! I truly loved reading this book, HOWEVER, I think it should have been a one and done. The story is good, the romance is cute and spicy, but at the same time… more books after this one feels drawn out. I would have preferred a single story wrapped up with a neat little bow at the end. It just felt like a great opportunity to write a one-off romance that stood on its own as an example of Lucy Score’s work. The plot is fast-paced with minor twists and turns, nothing wildly shocking.
Characters
Characters are very well developed as you see both of their internal, mental struggles. I think Lucy Score did a great job of making the characters people that you WANT to know more about! I have to say, though, Knox is my favorite character. The man is salty, sassy, and so chivalrous. I loved seeing him turn from a grumpy man into a lovesick puppy (albeit one who still shreds your favorite slipper, at times).
Themes and Messages
For me, I felt like this was, in part, a coming of age story along with the overarching theme of “self-care will save your life.” Most of us go through life like Naomi, trying to fit into the mold that people have made for us. We float along and do our best to make everyone but ourselves happy, and it was nice to encounter a story where every other character was telling the main character to look out for her, first.
I found this to be refreshing, because it’s not often we’re faced with strong female protagonists who are encouraged to take instead of give. Women are often portrayed as being the ones who need to fix every issue that arises and to take care of those around them before themselves. This was a nice change of pace experiencing our beloved protagonist to do what’s best for her.
Emotional Impact
This book made me laugh, a lot. I really enjoyed that while it can be a cookie-cutter romance, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Everything about this book screams, “I know I’m another romance but I’m SILLY!” Honestly did not disappoint. I felt like I was reading something fun instead of a predictable Hallmark movie.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Quick read, Funny, Attention grabbing, and mysterious at times.
Cons
Basic romance, somewhat predictable although not entirely, should’ve been a standalone book (in my humble opinion).
Overall Thoughts
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves a non-serious romance. I know my Mother-in-Law, a self-proclaimed Hallmark Channel addict, would absolutely adore this one! FINALLY, something I can recommend to her that won’t shock her into questioning who her son married. Mama, I promise you’ll like this one. It was a quick, simple read that kept my interest the entire time.
